Team Magic E4JR – Ready to Run Racer!

The new E4JR electric touring car chassis from Team Magic is a 95% pre-built, ready-to-run electric touring car which focuses on price and performance. No longer can you consider a chassis manufactured from plastic instead of carbon fiber, a low spec product when it features high quality components and features like those found on the new E4JR.

From its intricate, but highly efficient transmission, to its state of the art suspension geometry; the E4JR has close to everything a racer will ever need in just one box. The overall design of the car follows on from the already successful E4 series so there’s no need to be concerned about its ability to perform.

Let’s take a closer look at what the E4JR has to offer:

 

95% Factory Pre-Built

The E4JR is 95% factory assembled for your convenience. The remaining 5% needed to get your car up and running is incredibly simple. No wires or soldering, just choose your favorite color for the pre-styled Mazda6 body shell, obtain some batteries for the transmitter and after a quick charge of your H.A.R.D. NiMh battery pack your ready to go!

The whole car is carefully factory assembled saving you a considerable amount of construction time so you’re up and racing as quickly as possible.
 

Value

The E4JR is now the benchmark when it comes to performance at a low price. The high cost items like carbon fiber, titanium and aluminum which supposedly make a top of the line electric touring car are now no longer necessary.

In their place is high quality, super strong, plastics molded to match the suspension geometry and weight distribution found in every E4.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that plastic is an inferior product when compared to carbon fiber. Apart from one or two redundant characteristics found in carbon fiber, many of the latest manufacturing techniques now incorporate carbon injection to improve rigidity and durability.

Like it or loath it, plastic, even in the highest quality form, is simply cheaper to make. With the E4JR surrounded in high quality but low cost plastic, savings are then passed onto the end-user.
 

Durable

As mentioned above, technology has advanced plastic manufacturing ten fold. Plastics used today are far superior to what has been available in the past.

The improved strength means the cars are now stronger and more rigid then ever before. This additional strength means Team Magic can pay close attention to non stressed areas of the car and reduce the amount of material used in that area. This in turn reduces the overall weight of the car and improves its performance.

The E4JR also shares the same structural design as the E4RS and E4FS so strength and durability are second to none. For example, the E4RS and E4FS already feature upgraded suspension arms and belts and these items are already included as standard on the E4JR.
 

Quality

Quality isn’t just about the type of materials used to make a touring car chassis. It’s also about how the parts fit together, how well these same parts work together and how the car feels in the hand. Although we high recommend the E4JR package as it is out of the box, it does share the same structure and design as the other E4’s in Team Magic’s range. This means that if carbon fiber or aluminum is a requirement for your style of racing, many of the same parts can be shared between chassis’.

This upgradability not only covers exchanging of parts but also included option parts like sway-bars, springs, differentials, etc.

Main features of the E4JR

Electronic Speed Controller and H.A.R.D Motor

The main electronic components inside the E4JR are the H.A.R.D. JR Dual Mode Electronic Speed Controller and H.A.R.D. super quick motor. The high quality, super efficient Electronic Speed Controller (ESC) is designed to offer you total control of your cars speed and braking performance.

Programmed and setup ready to go from the factory, the H.A.R.D. JR ESC offers a dual mode function as well as reverse. The dual mode feature is ideal for a beginner who wishes to learn how the car steers and drives at slower speeds. Press the button for 3 seconds and the Dual Mode ESC drops into “Gentle Mode” for easy acceleration and control.

 

However, once you’ve mastered the cars handling, push the button again, and the Dual Mode ESC jumps into “Fierce Mode”, unleashing the true potential of your H.A.R.D. 18 Turn motor! Acceleration is improved dramatically for some serious fun.

The H.A.R.D 18 turn motor is incredibly powerful and is much faster than equivalent kit motors. It features internal cooling fins for improved performance and durability. And the best thing of all… the motor is completely maintenance free!

H.A.R.D. Radio System

Designed and manufactured by Futaba, a leader in radio transmitters for more than 40 years, the kit transmitter and receiver units are guaranteed to be of the highest quality available. From its lightweight design to its ergonomically designed handle, the H.A.R.D. Radio System is a perfect match for the E4JR and will offer years of untroubled service.

Narrow, Low Center of Gravity Chassis

Molded completely from high quality plastics, the bath tub chassis of the E4JR is the back-bone of the entire car. It’s responsible for holding every other component in its place and must remain strong and rigid even in the biggest of crashes.

The super narrow design means that weight savings can be accomplished without sacrificing durability. In addition to this, all the components fitted or attached to the chassis sit incredibly low to the ground for a center of gravity even some of the top-of-the-line chassis would envy. All of these characteristics add up to a chassis which is now accepted as one of the quickest cornering R/C cars in the world.
 

Tires and Wheels

As with any RTR kit, the chassis requires wheels and tires to get it working. Fortunately, the tires, wheels and inserts included with the E4JR aren’t some low-cost, low grip hard rubber compound tire.

The pre-glued tires on the E4JR are as close to competition level as you can get. They offer substantial amounts of grip without the hassle of gluing. A perfect match for the powerful 18turn H.A.R.D motor!


 

Transmission

The 3 belt, fully ball raced transmission system of the E4 chassis’ is what sets the car apart from the rest. The uniquely designed system operates at maximum efficiency thanks to high quality universal joints and low friction belts all made by Team Magic.

The 3 belt transmission offers huge layout benefits over the traditional 2 belt design which means the battery can now be placed closer to the center line of the car, helping to improve the cars side to side balance. In addition to this, the motor can also be moved toward the center line too.

All these small changes add up to one big improvement in corner speed and cornering consistency. The E4JR has got to be one of the best cars on the market to drive fast.

 

Suspension

Another unique feature on all of Team Magic’s touring car chassis is the flying wing suspension arms. Designed to improve strength while offering reducing unsprung weight, the suspension arms are some of the lightest and strongest on the market. A small alloy rod helps improve strength and reduce suspension flex for a more direct feel.

Also included is a high quality set of alloy/plastic shocks. The LX style shocks include derlin pistons and silicon seals for excellent performance and durability while the threaded shock bodies allow for the smallest of ride height adjustment without the need for additional parts or tools.

 

Tunable

The E4J R offers a heap of tuning options via K-Factory’s optional parts list.

Everything that you’d need to turn the E4JR into a top-of-the-line competition racer is available from K-Factory. Adjustments like camber, toe and roll-center are possible thanks to readily available hop-up parts. The list is huge, but to say that anything and everything to alter the cars handling is available the E4JR would be very accurate.

The chassis also includes front and rear ball differentials so tuning the car to multiple track surfaces shouldn’t be an issue. The ball differentials are fully adjustable and are excellent tools for altering the handling of the chassis too.

 

Smart Designs

A notable difference between the other E4 chassis’ and the E4JR is the way the battery is inserted and removed from the car. This operation is now handled from the top of the car rather than underneath. This means the time and tools required to insert and remove batteries is greatly reduced. Two thumb screws hold the battery in place without any need for Velcro or tape.

Thanks to the new chassis design, the E4JR is right at home with hard cased LIPO battery packs too. If you’re considering obtaining a second battery for your car, the options are endless.

Back in October 2006, pictures of Team Magic’s up and coming on-road electric touring car were beamed around the world via the internet. As an early prototype, it immediately captured the attention of the R/C world. From its unique styling to its complex nature, every part of the car was totally unique and offered an insight into where touring car chassis design was heading. Eleven months on, and Team Magic have quietly continued to develop and enhance the new car until it has reached its current state. With testing complete, it’s time for Team Magic to introduce the latest step forward in electric touring car technology; the Team Magic E4.

 

Let’s take a closer look at some of the key features of the E4; the ultimate on-road racing machine:

 

Centralized Component For Perfect Side To Side Balance:

With the belts out of the way, the designers got to work tweaking weight distribution so both sides of the car were equal. They focused on making sure the heaviest components, like the battery and motor were either centralized on the chassis or very close to it. After a few modifications, they achieved their goal and the E4 now has a perfect side to side balance. This gives the E4 another advantage through the corners by letting the car change direction much quicker. With all the weight placed in, toward the middle of the chassis the E4 also has a very neutral feel and there’s less chance of the chassis rolling over. Now you can push the boundaries when it comes to corner speed like never before.

 

As all the components moved inward, the main chassis plate began to shrink. This reduced the overall weight of the car, again, improving its performance.

 

Ultra Low Center of Gravity.

A fundamental consideration in manufacturing a high performance on-road touring car chassis is making sure the major components of the vehicle are placed as close to the ground as possible. This gives the car a low center of gravity for increased cornering speed and improved road holding capabilities. The E4 is a perfect illustration how this can be accomplished with creative precision.

 

The motor and battery pack can account for almost 40% of the cars entire moving mass so it’s critical they are given priority in positioning. The motor area of the E4 is machined away to lower the motor a total of two millimeters past the top of the main chassis plate. This may seem like a small gain, but with this design the motor is potentially just 1mm away from the ground. It would be impossible to get it any lower without placing it in undue risk from potential damage.

 

The battery pack, which is inserted into the chassis from the bottom of the car, receives the same treatment as the motor. Held in place by an aluminum battery tray, the cells are just fractions of a millimeter from being flush with the bottom of the chassis, but at the same time, totally protected. The aluminum tray also aids in dispersing heat from the battery pack.

 

With the battery being inserted from the bottom of the car, Team Magic’s designers were able to lower the top-plate too. This in turn, meant the gearboxes, bulk heads, differentials and steering system were able to follow the same pattern. A low center of gravity chassis gone to the extreme.

 

Flying Wing Suspension Arms:

An exclusive design from Team Magic is the Flying Wing Suspension arms found on the E4. This new manufacturing process allowed Team Magic to reduce the size of the suspension arms without sacrificing strength. A lightweight, hollow aluminum rod gives the suspension arm its potent strength and provided the E4 designers with an opportunity to remove or shape excess plastic from around each arm. Both options offer interesting benefits to improving the E4’s performance.

 

The removal of excess plastic helped to not only lower the chassis total weight but also meant the shocks didn’t have to cope with additional loads. This improved the E4’s acceleration and ability to cope with a bumpy track or surface.

 

Next, Team Magic set about shaping the arm to serve two purposes; firstly the removal of any holes in the arm makes it much easier for cleaning and secondly, the shape of the arm was molded to help improve airflow. The airflow runs smoothly over the arm and this helps the E4 cut through the air, reducing its drag co-efficient dramatically.

 

Unique Super Low Friction 3 Belt Transmission:

Another unique design feature of the E4 is the introduction of a 3 belt transmission. It was chosen because of its advantages in motor, battery and radio gear placement. In a classic two belt transmission system, the front belt is centered down the chassis. This layout restricts the design of the car greatly and forces the manufacturer to compromise in componentry layout. The E4 is exactly the opposite which meant no compromises!

 

Team Magic has also included a beautifully machine aluminum front dual action one-way/spool differential. With the pins inserted the differential acts like a spool. Remove two pins and the diff turns into a one-way. This allows the driver to customize the transmission to suit individual track requirements. In addition to this, the pulleys and center mount are also machine from the same high quality aluminum for improved pulley and belt durability. The rear of the car features a fully adjustable ball differential.

 

The whole system is set in motion by super low friction belts. The placement and size of the teeth on the belts were designed to be a perfect balance between durability and low friction.

All in all, the advantages of the three belt transmission system outweighed the minimal increase in transmission friction. Top speed can be easily found, lightning quick corner speed cannot.

 

Super Easy Maintenance

The fun doesn’t stop there though because the E4 is also an absolute charm to work on too! The design of the car incorporates quick and easy access to all of the high maintenance areas of any on-road touring car. Take for example, the front and rear differentials. Only four screws hold each differential securely in place. Undo these 4 screws and you now have the ability to lift the entire differential out of car with ease. Make some changes or give it a clean, then drop the diff back in, tighten up the 4 screws and you’re ready to race again. Nothing could be easier.

 

The same applies for the main layshaft which is also held in place by only 4 screws. Slide the belts off the pulleys and lift the entire layshaft out of the car. These quick maintenance features flow right throughout the entire E4 chassis. From the wheels up, the E4 is the ultimate user-friendly touring car on the market.
